1. Eating sensibly
Eat whole grains like oats, millet, barley, etc instead of refined – replace white flour with whole wheat flour, polished rice with brown rice, sea salt or rock salt instead of refined salt (Tip: In a glass container, keep the rock of salt and water. It will dissolve slowly and use this salt solution), use dates, honey, molasses, raw sugar instead of refined sugar, use refined oils sparingly, cold pressed natural oils are better. Include organically grown minimum five to seven servings of fresh fruits, vegetables, green leafy vegetables, legumes daily. Add dried fruit, nuts, seeds, and spices to your diet and add special foods according to your needs.
For instance, flax seeds are good for heart, brain, hormones and constipation; garlic is good for heart, and boosting immunity; aloe vera is good for boosting immunity, detoxification and constipation and kombucha tea is good for regeneration and preservation of tissues.
Reduce on animal proteins – non vegetarian foods and dairy products, preservatives, colas and caffeinated food. Eat two to three meals daily, with a gap of at least three hours (time taken by meal to get fully digested) between two meals. Keep one-fourth stomach empty to facilitate digestion. This has shown to increase the life span. Avoid overeating. Chew your food well. Avoid exercise or bath immediately after a meal. Practice fasting (full or partial) at least once a week. This is physically and spiritually beneficial. Ensure bowels are opened daily. Figs, Isabgol, flax seeds, aloe vera juice, raisins, fibrous fruit (guavas, peaches, pears, prunes) and vegetables (leafy greens, beetroot), whole grains, nuts – all ensure proper bowel movements.
2. A detoxifying procedure (preferably for a week)
Eat only natural food which has not been cooked on fire, microwave or oven – all type of fruit, vegetables (like raw tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, peas, cauliflowers, cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, spinach, etc.) These can be seasoned with rock or sea salt and lemon or tangerines, honey, dates, raisins, figs, nuts, seeds, grains (can be sprouted and taken as such or seasoned), bean and legumes (can be sprouted and eaten as such or mixed with other items and seasoned).
Can be followed up as once a day per week routine with regular food intake for rest of the six days. The above food may be lightly steamed (if chewing, masticating and digestion is difficult) but refrain from frying, roasting, using refined fats, sugars, salts, grains and dairy and animal products (with the exception of fresh yogurt).
